Let the Youth Lead! – Open Forum for Youth Voices
On Thursday, March 1, “Let the Youth Lead – An Open Forum for Youth Voices” will be held for youth from across Cape Ann. The forum is scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM and will meet in the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church’s Community Room. The accessible entrance is at 10 Church Street.
The goal is to provide a space where young people can meet and share their thoughts, feelings, questions and ideas regarding the recent wave of youth leadership and action happening across the country.
Participants will be encouraged to explore how they can effectively increase youth agency locally and beyond, in the short term and the long term.
The current conversation about gun laws and school safety is certainly one of the biggest topics right now, but the forum will not be limited to that subject.
Should interest arise in the upcoming March 24 March for Our Lives events – locally, in Boston or in DC – a breakout group will form to develop options to support participation.
The forum will be facilitated by Rose Sheehan, Gloucester Unitarian Universalist’s Education and Community Engagement Leader. Refreshments will be served.
Questions may be directed to Rose Sheehan at info@gloucesteruu.org.

This year the Chamber welcomes President and CEO of Gorton’s Judson Reis as keynote speaker. Judson’s timely presentation will offer an overview of Gorton’s current business after nearly 170 years here in Gloucester. He will also offer his insights on the state of the seafood industry domestically and internationally, how the industry has evolved and how Gorton’s is adapting to these changes. Mr. Reis will also give his perspective and insights on the overall economic outlook for the year ahead.

Jud Reis joined Gorton’s in 1990 as a Marketing Assistant. During his 28 year career at Gorton’s he has held a number of progressively more responsible roles within the Marketing activity including assignments in consumer marketing, trade planning, new products, and business development. In 2004, he was promoted to Vice President of Marketing, where he had overall responsibility for the Gorton’s Brand in the US and BlueWater brand in Canada. In April of 2009 he was promoted to President and CEO.
The Economic Outlook Breakfast will also feature such regular highlights as the introduction of new Chamber board members, special salutes, and the chance to connect with business colleagues and elected officials. A light breakfast at the Gloucester House Restaurant is included and the program will conclude by 9:00 AM. Tickets are $30 and may be purchased online at capeannchamber.com or by calling the Chamber office 978-283-1601.
The Rose Baker February/March Artists
Juni Van Dyke, Director of the Art Program at the Rose Baker Senior Center, recently announced the Artists of the Month for February and March. Every two months artists from the program are honored with an exhibit of their works in the lobby of the Senior Center. The public is encouraged to stop by the Center between 9am and 4pm any weekday to see the work of these accomplished artists.
For February and March, Juni has selected two artists who have been honored before: Ed Leavitt and Bob Quinn. It is fun to see how the work of these artists has evolved in just a short time. The artists are shown below: Ed (l) and Bob (r) in front of the exhibit.

Ed Leavitt is being honored for the third time as an artist of the month; he was one of the artists honored in the first exhibit when he exhibited his watercolor work. The in 2016, Ed exhibited his work in acrylics and has selected an assortment of his most recent work in acrylics for this exhibit.

As you may recall, Ed’s life profession was in the building trades. In 2013, after a stroke, Ed decided to spend time following his love of art. Now, by way of what Ed terms as “fantastic therapy”, he is bringing his understanding of fine detail and serious craftsmanship to the medium of watercolor and acrylic. Ed’s inspiration is infused by Gloucester’s history particularly its waterfront and as Ed says, “most anything that tickles my fancy”.
Bob Quinn was honored last summer when he showed scenes from around Gloucester. In this exhibit, Bob has selected a variety of subjects that show the many techniques he has mastered.

Bob Quinn’s formal interest in art began in his high school mechanical drawing class. Over the years, Bob has developed enviable skills in leather carving, metal work, stained glass, and computer graphics and video. His professional career was in marketing and advertising which allowed him to put his creativity and artistic eye to work in the business world.
Bob admires the many notable Cape Ann’s artists, and has used their work to inspire his own personal style of drawing, sketching, and watercolor. Bob’s style is straight forward, unencumbered, and charming.
What’s New with Backyard Growers
Looking for a way to support Backyard Growers this winter?
Join us on March 3rd as we partner with Treetop Yoga for a Karma class!

Treetop’s Emma Delphin will lead the class and provide the bartending skills. Emma offers an energizing, lighthearted 1 hour flow and after we will celebrate our community with a fun post savasana cocktail!
Minimum donation of $10 includes the class and the cocktail – all money raised will go to Backyard Growers.
If you find more zen in the garden then on the mat, consider supporting our Give-A-Garden, Get-A-Garden Program.

The Get-a-Garden, Give-a-Garden is a program for those who are not income eligible for the Backyard Garden Program. When you participate in the Get-a-Garden, Give-a-Garden program, not only do you get a garden, but you make it possible for a low-income Gloucester family to have a garden just like yours! When you make a contribution of $600, we use half of it to build a garden for you, and the other half to build a garden for a low-income Gloucester family. $300 of your contribution is tax deductible.
