SeniorCare Inc. will hold its annual Celebrate Spring Breakfast to benefit Meals on Wheels on Friday, March 16, 2018, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at The Gloucester House, located 63 Rogers Street in downtown Gloucester. Tickets are $12 per person and include a buffet breakfast. Placemat sponsorships are still available.
Formerly the SeniorCare Valentines Breakfast, proceeds from the breakfast will benefit SeniorCare’s Meals on Wheels program.

As I write, it’s yet another cold, grey day, but GAAC has the perfect antidote to February — on Friday night, February 9 at 8:00pm, we will bring you our annual evening of astrophotography.
Five of our best astrophotographers will each show off a handful of favorite pictures they’ve taken of galaxies, nebulae and other astronomical objects, and will tell you what each one is, how big and far away it is, and any interesting issues they had getting the shot.
This event is always a colorful, fun and exciting evening, one that will leave you with a new appreciation of what these folks do, as well as a lot of new knowledge about the strange, distant and compelling objects they photograph.
Come early to see friends old and new, grab a good seat and some great goodies, and share some terrific conversation and some wonderful views. See you on the 9th!
The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club meets from 8:00 pm to 9:30 pm on the first Friday of the month at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan St in Lanesville. See the website for more info, or the Facebook Page, or follow us @GAACster.

The singers, ages 5 through 18, are from three Episcopal churches, St. John’s of Gloucester, Christ Church in Andover, and All Saints Church in Chelmsford, assembled to give them an opportunity to sing as part of a larger ensemble in a grand space with a bigger audience than their home choir situations permit.
The works will range from the famous Shaker Tune, “Simple Gifts,” through religious melodies, spirituals, and a work, ‘The Call of Wisdom,” written in 2012 for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
The audience will be invited to join the combined choirs in singing “All Creatures of Our God and King and Beethoven’s “Hymn to Joy.” Prayers and scripture readings will be interspersed throughout the hour-long program. A reception will follow.
The Choir Festival dates back to 2009 but this is its first appearance in Gloucester. Mark Nelson, music director at St. John’s Church, said the Meetinghouse was chosen as the venue for its ample seating for over 300 persons, as well as its fine acoustics. Nelson will be joined in conducting by Barbara Bruns of the Andover church and Maggie Marshall of the Chelmsford Church.
The Gloucester Meetinghouse is located at the intersection of Middle and Church Street. Parking is available on the green in front of the Meetinghouse, in the St. John’s Church lot at 33 Washington St., and in the municipal lot at nearby St. Peter’s Square, on Rogers Street. Access for persons with disabilities is from the side door at 10 Church St.
The event is being hosted by the Gloucester Meetinghouse Foundation. Admission is free (donations gratefully accepted). More information is available at:

Hosts the 8th Annual Polar Plunge to Make Polio History
The Gloucester Rotary Club will again host clubs from Rotary District 7930 (eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire) for the 8th annual Polar Plunge on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at Long Beach in Gloucester. The event is part of Rotary International’s ongoing campaign to eradicate polio in our lifetime. Several hundred people are expected to plunge into the cold waters off Cape Ann this year. Last year, over 300 people braved the icy waters, raising more than $120,000. Since the first Rotary Polar Plunge in 2011, Massachusetts Rotarians have raised over a half-million dollars with this event.
Please support Gloucester Rotarians as they brave the icy waters to help eradicate polio in our lifetime. The goal for the plunge is $125,000. Supporters can text “polio” to 71777 or visit www.GloucesterRotary.org to make a donation. Help Rotarians lead the way to eradicate this dreaded disease!

The Chamber is doing the Winter Birding Boat Trip again this year!
Weather permitting, we will be going out on Saturday, March 10, 2018, from 8:00 AM to Noon. The cost of this wonderful excursion is $75.00. Space is limited, so please sign up early– we did sell out last year and we expect to do so this year as well.
The Cape Ann Winter Birding Boat Trip is a chance for bird-lovers to come to Gloucester and to brave whatever weather winter brings, in order to look for loons, grebes, sea ducks, alcids and other avian delights of the season along Cape Ann ‘s spectacular shoreline- including puffins- and we hope you will join us! The year 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, passed in 1918. The treaty is a seminal piece of legislation that has saved, and continues to save, the life of billions upon billions of North American birds. Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Geographic, Audubon, and BirdLife have created a timely alliance, joining forces this year to celebrate birds, while also raising awareness about the current dangers that they face. It seems to be shaping up to be another big Snowy Owl year, so we will be looking for these spectacular raptors as well as all the other winter specialties.

We are honored to have Wayne Petersen, Jim Berry and Robert Buchsbaum along to help us identify our flying friends. Wayne is the Director of Massachusetts Important Bird Area (IBA) Program, with the Mass Audubon, and Jim and Robert are enthusiasts extraordinaire, and have been helping us with Bird Identification for years!
Last year we had a spectacular trip where along with the many different birds we spotted, we also were delighted to see Whales and Dolphins! We hope for the same this year!
