Veteran’s Day at the Cape Ann Museum

A call for wartime letters and photographs.

On Friday, November 11 – Veteran’s Day – the Cape Ann Museum will host a series of special programs in appreciation of the men and women of Cape Ann who have served or are serving our country in the military. The citizens of Cape Ann have a long history of service – from the Revolutionary War to current conflicts.

For this day, the Museum is creating a short film to be screened. The film will pair photographs – from the Civil War to today – with readings from letters written home by men and women on the front.  We are reaching out to the community to help supplement this project with photographs and letters you may have from all military conflicts, but especially those since the Civil War.

Anyone caring to share photographs and letters is asked to bring them to the Museum’s library on Wednesday, October 5 or Thursday, October 6, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. where Museum staff will scan them for inclusion in the film. Submitted items can be picked up on Wednesday, October 18 or Thursday, October 20, or they can be donated to the Museum to be preserved in the archives.

Architect Eleanor Raymond: A Pioneer in the Field

The life and accomplishments of Eleanor Raymond (1887–1989), a pioneering woman in the field of architecture during the mid-20th century, will be the subject of a talk presented by documentary film maker Lyda Kuth. A graduate of the Cambridge School of Art and Landscape Architecture for Women, Eleanor Raymond was a noted innovator partnering with solar energy researcher Dr. Maria Telkes to design one of the first successful solar-heated buildings in the Northeast. On Cape Ann, Raymond designed homes for artist Natalie Hays Hammond, anthropologist Carlton S. Coon and a summer cottage for herself overlooking Gloucester’s outer harbor. Lyda Kuth is an independent filmmaker and Executive Director of the LEF Foundation, which supports New England independent documentary filmmakers. She has been recognized by the Massachusetts Cultural Council with the prestigious Commonwealth Award and honored by Women in Film and Video New England with an Image Award.

American realist painter Edward Hopper is known to have painted in Gloucester on five separate occasions during the summer months in the years 1912, 1923, 1924, 1926 and 1928. His earliest visit in 1912 was made in the company of fellow artist Leon Kroll. During his second visit to Cape Ann in 1923, Hopper courted the young artist Josephine Nivison. He also began working in watercolor, capturing the local landscape and architecture in loosely rendered, light filled paintings

Adult Printmaking Workshop at the Cape Ann Museum

A four-part Folly Cove Designer-inspired printmaking workshop at the Cape Ann Museum

Louise Kenyon, Folly Cove Design

Enjoy four days of close instruction from artists Mary Rhinelander and Victoria Petway as they delve into the world of block printing. A shared affinity for the Folly Cove Designers brought Mary and Victoria together and they will guide the workshop using Virginia Lee Burton Demetrios’ three rules: Do it! Don’t copy! Don’t give up!

This customized course offers adult participants a special opportunity to create his/her own artwork surrounded by the inspirational work of the Folly Cove Designers. Participants will sketch, carve linoleum blocks and print an original work to take home.  They will leave this course with a greater understanding of the history and work of the Folly Cove Designers, with a new creative outlet and with twenty original greeting cards just in time for the holiday season. All levels of experience are welcome and materials will be provided (participants will be required to bring enthusiasm and some elbow grease!).

The workshop will meet on Thursdays, October 27 to November 17.

This special walking tour will explore the neighborhood surrounding the Museum, which includes many of the Gloucester houses immortalized by Hopper’s paintings.

Experience 19th century Gloucester history as this tour leads you through the neighborhoods and waterfront that inspired the artwork of native son Fitz Henry Lane. Learn how Lane rose from modest beginnings in the pre-civil war era to worldwide recognition as a marine painter and why, even today, numerous artists journey to Cape Ann to capture its unusual light, first immortalized by Lane.

Participants are encouraged to bring smart phones or tablets in order to use the rich sources of information in the newly released Fitz Henry Lane Online catalog raisonne. During this walk, you will connect specific locations to the paintings they inspired by accessing the online catalog. Alternative visuals will also be available.

Cape Ann Museum Book Club

The Cape Ann Museum is pleased to present a monthly book club for year-round residents of Cape Ann. Beginning this October and running through April, the Museum will host book club meetings on the third Tuesday of the month in its auditorium from 11:00a.m. to 12:30p.m.

Space is limited to 15; reservations are required and will be for the entirety of the October to April program length. Due to the afternoon meeting time participants are invited to bring their boxed lunches. Free for Museum members or included with general admission. Not a member?
