SeniorCare Inc. will host a free 8-week workshop, A Matter of Balance, at their offices located at 49 Blackburn Center in Gloucester, MA, on Mondays, starting on September 10 and ending November 5, 2018. Each session will be held from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.

Many older adults experience concerns about falling and restrict their activities. A Matter of Balance is an award-winning program designed to manage falls and increase activity levels.

Participants learn to:

• View falls as controllable
• Set goals for increasing activity
• Make changes to reduce the risk of falling
• Exercise to increase strength and balance

Who should attend?

• Anyone concerned about falls
• Anyone who has fallen in the past
• Anyone who has restricted activities because of falling
• Anyone interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength

Understand, Approach & Respond:
Effective Interventions with Individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease & Related Dementias. The training will provide 3 approved credits by the Massachusetts Office of Emergency Medical Services for EMS personnel.

This no-cost training is designed to provide evidence-informed education to First Responders on understanding the impact that Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias may have on individuals and communities. This program has been developed specifically for First Responders. Strategies acquired from this training will provide an understanding of Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias and practical strategies to optimize the effectiveness of responding during on-scene interactions with persons living with dementia and their families. Additionally, attendees will gain an understanding of available dementia-related resources.

June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Month and June 15, 2018, is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. SeniorCare Inc. and several non-profit and civic organizations are holding special events throughout the North Shore to increase awareness of this growing issue in our society.

10,000 people turn 65 in the US every day. That trend is going to continue for the next 20 years. Our demographics are shifting, and we will soon have more elder people in the US than ever before. At the same time that the population is growing, we know that a startling number of elders face abusive situations. Every year an estimated 5 million, or 1 in 10, older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. And that’s only part of the picture: Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23.5 cases go unreported.

Elder abuse and neglect and take on various forms. It can be physical, emotional/verbal, sexual, financial, neglect by a caregiver, or self-neglect. Elder abuse can occur anywhere – in the home, in nursing homes, or other institutions. It affects seniors across all socioeconomic groups, cultures, and races. In Massachusetts, an elder is anyone 60 or older.

If you suspect abuse or self-neglect, don’t assume that someone has already reported it. In cases of immediate danger call 911. Otherwise, you can call the Massachusetts Elder Abuse Hotline at 800-922-2275.

SeniorCare is participating in five rallies to increase awareness of Elder Abuse this year. The first rally will take place in Gloucester on Thursday, June 7, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to meet at the flagpole in front of the Gloucester Police Station on Main Street at 11:00 a.m. The rally will march down Main Street, continuing along Rogers Street to the Fitz Henry Lane parking lot (across from Walgreens on the corner of Rogers Street and Harbor Loop). Following the march, there will be a cookout in the Fitz Henry Lane lot. Gloucester’s event is supported by the Gloucester Police Department, HAWC, the Gloucester Council on Aging, and SeniorCare.

Rockport’s “Show You Care” rally will be held on Thursday, June 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Five Corners (the intersection of Broadway, Railroad Avenue, and Main Street). This event is supported by the Rockport Police Department, the Rockport Council on Aging and SeniorCare.

There will be a rally in Manchester by the Sea on the Village Green in front of Town Hall on Tuesday, June 19, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Manchester’s event is supported by the Manchester’s Police Department, SeniorCare and the Manchester Council on Aging.

Beverly will hold a rally in front of Beverly City Hall on Friday, June 15, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Beverly’s event is supported by the Beverly Police Department, HAWC, SeniorCare and the Beverly Council on Aging.

Ipswich will hold a rally on Thursday, June 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at Five Corners (the intersection of Central and Market Streets). Following the rally, refreshments will be served at the Ipswich Council on Aging at 25 Green Street. This event is supported by the Ipswich Police Department, the Essex County Sheriff’s Department, the Ipswich Council on Aging and SeniorCare.

The Gloucester Rotary Club has named Sal Frontiero and Susan Kelly as Paul Harris Fellows, the prestigious award named after the Chicago lawyer who founded the Rotary movement in 1905. Frontiero was selected by a club committee of previous recipients of the award, while Kelly was chosen by members of the Interact Club, the very active group of Gloucester High School Junior Rotarians. Frontiero and Kelly will be honored at a special dinner on Wednesday, May 23, at Cruiseport Gloucester, located at 6 Rowe Square in downtown Gloucester. The social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Sal Frontiero is a Gloucester native and local attorney, who currently owns and operates Frontiero Law Office in Gloucester, a general practice law firm.  He is active in the community and is currently a member of the Gloucester Rotary Club, the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce and the Gloucester Little League Board of Directors.  In addition, he provides pro bono legal services to seniors through the Rose Baker Senior Center.  He is a past President of the Gloucester Rotary Club, the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Cape Ann YMCA.  He has also been involved with numerous other nonprofit and charitable organizations in the Cape Ann area.

Sal graduated cum laude from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and is also a 1993 cum laude graduate of Suffolk University Law School.  In his spare time, he enjoys exercising, mountain biking and spending time with family.  He resides in Gloucester with his wife, Nicole, and their two children.

Susan Kelly is the co-founder and President of Generous Gardeners, a non-profit group of volunteer gardeners dedicated to the beautification of Gloucester with flowers.  In addition to installation of public gardens in Gloucester behind the police station and on the many traffic islands around the city, Susan was able to facilitate the installation of the Stacy Boulevard Gardens with Ann Gilardi Johnson, who designed the Fishermen’s wives plaza as well as the new beds.  Susan and other Generous Gardeners volunteers began planting the flowers in the fall of 2016 and continue to maintain those gardens. She is also the President of Microsearch Corporation, a company providing online research database websites. Susan divides her time now between Microsearch and her work with Generous Gardeners, which has become known in and out of Gloucester for its large and active membership and, in particular, for the boulevard and other public space gardens the group preserves. A graduate of Harvard University and Boston College Law School, she lives in West Gloucester with her husband Chuck. They have three grown children, Christopher, Courtland and Chase.

The Gloucester Rotary Club invites the public to attend their FUNdraising event – “A Night at the Races” on Friday, May 4, at Cruiseport Gloucester, located at 6 Rowe’s Wharf in Gloucester. Doors open at 6:30 pm. All proceeds from this event will support local and international programs of the Gloucester Rotary.

A Night at the Races promises to be a fun-filled evening for adults with all the suspense and excitement of being at the racetrack. High quality, video-taped horse races are narrated from start to finish by lively announcers. During the evening there will be complimentary hors d’oeuvre, a cash bar, and variety of raffles. At various points during the evening, betters will be able to use their winnings to bid on merchandise and services that have been donated for the event. For the most fun, reserve a table – bring a group. Tickets are $10 per person and may be purchased from any Gloucester Rotarian.

The Gloucester Rotary Club was established in 1923, and has more than 60 members who are leaders in the community. Rotary’s motto, “Service Above Self” is the basis of all their good work. Former Valentine’s Day Event is now a Spring Celebration!

SeniorCare Inc. will hold its annual Fundraiser Breakfast at The Gloucester House this Friday, March 16, 2018, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.  Tickets are $12 per person and include a buffet breakfast. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit SeniorCare’s Meals on Wheels program.  Tickets to the breakfast can be purchased online at www.seniorcareinc.org or at the door on March 16.

The Rotary Club of Gloucester will host a Trivia Night on Friday, March 23, at the Gloucester House, located at 63 Rogers Street in downtown Gloucester. The doors will open at 6 p.m. and the game will begin at 7 p.m.  Teams of four will compete for the title of Cape Ann Trivia Champions.  Register before March 16 and be entered to win a special Early Bird Registration raffle!

All trivia fans are invited to this fun night of knowledge and laughter. The registration fee is $100 for a team of four players.  Proceeds from this event will support programs of the Gloucester Rotary Club.  The night will also feature a 50/50 raffle, a cash bar, and light snacks for purchase.
