Seaside Garden Club’s June Meeting
The June 12 meeting of the Seaside Garden Club will conclude the season with a very special field trip to Powder House Hill followed by a pot luck supper back at the Manchester Community Center. Guest speaker Nadine Mazola will introduce the concept of “Forest Bathing” to the group. Forest Therapy is a research-based framework for supporting healing and wellness through immersion in forests and other natural environments. In Japan it is called “Shinrin Yoku,” which translates to “forest bathing.” Studies have demonstrated a wide array of health benefits, especially in the cardiovascular and immune systems. Nadine is a Certified Forest Therapy Guide through the “Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and Programs” (http://www.natureandforesttherapy.org/). Her training includes special knowledge in guiding people of all ages in Shinrin Yoku. There is a body of scientific knowledge that supports the benefits of walking and spending time in nature as a wellness practice and an effective way to manage stress. As a cancer survivor, practicing good self-care is Nadine’s most important guiding principle. She has come to know the healing and support that nature can offer through her own personal wellness journey. A Massachusetts native who loves spending time wandering and exploring in nature, she is joyous to be sharing Forest Bathing with us and creating environments for Forest Therapy. We’ll experience forest bathing while walking through Powder House Reservation.
Members and guests are encouraged to meet at MCC at 5:45pm to car pool to Newport Park. The walk begins at 6pm. All participants will return to Manchester Community Center at approximately 7:30pm to enjoy a pot luck supper with both Nadine and Mike Dyer who will do a brief overview of the Manchester Essex Conservation Trust organization. Seaside Garden Club welcomes new members; the June meeting is a good time to join for next year, $30 membership.

Seaside Vintage Market at Second Glance!

SEASIDE VINTAGE MARKET at Second Glance, June 2 & 3!
Mid-century vintage finds, Boho Chic, food and music come to Second Glance, the thrift store of The Open Door during its first annual Seaside Vintage Market on June 2 (9 a.m. -7 p.m.) and June 3 (11 a.m. – 5 p.m.) at 2 Pond Road, Gloucester.
For more than a year, volunteers and staff have been saving vintage treasures to transform the thrift store in to a once-in-a-year vintage extravaganza. Overnight, shelves will be cleared, reorganized, and those special treasures dusted and displayed for the weekend revelry.
Last year, Second Glance headed out of town to a vintage fair in Maine. It was so successful, they decided to stay put this year, and bring the vintage buzz to Cape Ann.
“We are really excited to bring Seaside Vintage Market to Second Glance,” says Julie LaFontaine, Executive Director of The Open Door. “Sales of treasures donated by the community support our local neighbors, and the two-day event promises to be an adventure for the savvy shopper!”
Along with vintage housewares, clothing, furniture, jewelry, and unique finds, local hot dog stand Red Umbrella, (aka Joe Hot-Dog Junior) will offer refreshments, and local musicians will entertain.
The mission of The Open Door is to alleviate the impact of hunger in our community. We use practical strategies to connect people to good food, to advocate on behalf of those in need, and to engage others in the work of building food security. The Open Door serves residents of Gloucester, Rockport, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Essex, Ipswich, Topsfield, Boxford, Rowley, Hamilton, and Wenham.
