The Cape Ann Museum tells multiple stories, all relating to a single remarkable place and during the month of January all Cape Ann residents (Rockport, Gloucester, Manchester-by-the-Sea and Essex) are welcome to enjoy its galleries for free. If you’ve never been to the Cape Ann Museum, now is the time. Its collections represent your history—the people, the industries and especially the art and culture. We invite you to explore!

In addition to its permanent collections, the Museum offers a rotating schedule of special exhibitions throughout the year as well as related programs and events for adults and families. This is a wonderful opportunity to visit (or revisit) the current special exhibition, Voicing the Woods: Jeremy Adams, Instrument Maker and the newly opened exhibition Kodachrome Memory: Nathan Benn’s North Shore, 1978. Voicing the Woods showcases the prodigious skills and artistry of Jeremy Adams, one of the most gifted musical instrument makers in New England. Kodachrome Memory, features more than thirty photographs taken in and around Cape Ann in 1978 by photographer Nathan Benn while on assignment on Boston’s North Shore for National Geographic Magazine.

In addition to free admission, the Museum has lined up a full schedule of programming for visitors to enjoy. Visit http://www.capeannmuseum.org/events/ for full descriptions. The Cape Ann Museum is located at 27 Pleasant Street in Gloucester. Open 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Tuesday – Saturday and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sundays.

Kestrel is excited to present “Stories from the Wild Side”! An in- depth (pun intended) winter exploration of animal tracking and story telling. The class will be split into two 4-class field sessions, meeting every Saturday morning, and culminating in a project day at the Get Outside Center at 186 Main st Gloucester at the end of each session.
Traipse through snowy woodlands in search of wildlife evidence and tracks. Practice tracking animals and reading clues to the life of the forest. Learn techniques for developing characters, drawing readers into a place, and creating intriguing plots.
Work independently or as a team to create an original nature based fiction story featuring the discoveries we have made, and your own imagination. Students can utilize any medium to tell their story; from written work to drawing to a diorama, or anything in between.

Gloucester, MA – Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken, with the City’s Health Department, Sawyer Free Library and the Rose Baker Senior Center, in cooperation with community partners Action, Inc., The Open Doorand the Grace Center, are providing warming centers for vulnerable residents during extreme-cold weather events.
After last winter’s February 14th cold-snap, Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken formed a taskforce with City department directors and community leaders to establish a comprehensive cold-weather response to help ensure the health and safety of residents without permanent housing. The result is a plan, presented in March, that assures those who need shelter from the extreme cold will have a place in the community where they can stay warm.
“When temperatures drop this low, our city has an obligation to help those in need to stay warm,” said Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken. “We don’t want anyone out in the cold which is why I’m proud that our community is coming together to provide assistance for anyone in need.”
Karin Carroll, director of the Gloucester Health Department states, “Gloucester is a tremendous community that works together to ensure the safety and well-being of its most vulnerable residents in extreme weather conditions. All residents should limit exposure outdoors during the extreme cold and look out for neighbors, especially the elderly.”
