Rockport Winter Farmers Market on SATURDAY. Plus more stuff…
Christmas in Rockport this year has been Christmas-ier than I can ever remember it being in the 14 years I’ve been around (now you all know that I’m 14 years old, because of course I was born a Rockport native). You will get in the spirit in spite of yourself, even if the weather is so mild it’s more like June (which is always so freakin cold here) than December.
TOMORROW the Rockport Winter Farmers Market features fresh food from actual farmers who grow stuff and have been growing stuff specifically for this market and the Cape Ann Farmers Market (next Saturday 12/19 in Gloucester!). So don’t let the farmers down and come buy fresh, local food. The market will also feature baked goods, nisu bread, pickles, fruits, granola, nuts, and more more more. 9am to 1pm at the Rockport Community House at 58 Broadway.

SeniorCare Hosts Free Medicare Counseling
SeniorCare now hosts free SHINE counseling sessions for Medicare members and prospective members. SHINE Counselors offer free, unbiased information about the many choices to be made when enrolling or re-enrolling in Medicare. Anyone interested in reserving a 45-minute session should contact 978-281-1750 (TTY 978-282-1836). All counseling sessions are held at SeniorCare’s offices at 49 Blackburn Center in Gloucester, MA.
SHINE, Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone, provides free health insurance information, counseling, and assistance to Massachusetts residents with Medicare and their caregivers. SHINE is administered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs in coordination with local agencies.
SeniorCare, a Massachusetts Aging Services Access Point, with offices in Beverly and Gloucester, is a regional consumer-centered organization that provides and coordinates services to elders and others, enabling them to live independently at home or in a setting of their choice while remaining part of the community. SeniorCare can be reached at 978-281-1750 or 1-866-927-1050 (TTY 978-282-1836). SeniorCare is also a federally designated Area Agency on Aging, providing services such as Meals on Wheels and Community Dining Sites. SeniorCare’s service area includes: Beverly, Essex, Gloucester, Hamilton, Ipswich, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Rockport, Topsfield and Wenham.
December 11 GAAC holiday party!
Everyone is invited to the December 11 GAAC holiday party! We’ll have all kinds of goodies to eat and drink, and lots of good company and conversation, but the big news is all about who we’ve got speaking. Babak Tafreshi, the creator of “The World At Night,” will discuss his work and present a stunning program of his unique astrophotographs. Babak is an internationally known photographer and a tireless advocate for astronomy and the preservation of dark skies.

“TWAN founder and leader, Babak Tafreshi is an award winning photographer working with the National Geographic, Sky&Telescope magazine, and the European Southern Observatory (ESO). Babak is also a freelance science journalist and astronomy communicator using all media. Born in 1978 in Tehran he is based in Boston, United States, but could be anywhere on the planet, from the Sahara to the Himalayas or Antarctica. He is a board member of Astronomers Without Borders organization, an international organization to bridge between cultures and connect people around the world through their common interest to astronomy. He received the 2009 Lennart Nilsson Award, the world’s most recognized award for scientific photography, for his global contribution to night sky photography.”
Holy cow, you’ll want to come early for this one. The joint will be packed. This will be a GAAC party to remember!
The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club meets at 8:00 pm on the second Friday of every month at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street Gloucester. Cape Ann Marina Resort is donating 50% of all pool pass sales sold between 5-8pm on Dec 9th to Eastern Point Day School!
This event is open to the public! Please join us for poolside fun and support this great local school.
Come and swim or just hang out by the pool and socialize while the kids swim. No fee for entry. Food and drink is available at the bar in the pool area (food/drink proceeds are not part of the fundraiser).
Swimming fees:
$12/adult (1-day pass)
$10/child 4-7yrs (1-day pass) OR $8 with adult pass purchase
Season passes and punch card passes also available!

There’s an announcement that there will be a suburban wildlife education lecture at City Hall on January 11 with the snow date of February 1 at 7 PM. Speakers will include Chief Campanello, Mayor Romeo Theken, representatives from fisheries and wildlife, and environmental police officers. The forum will focus on coyotes and other animals that we live with on Cape Ann.
