Each year, Hunger Action Month™ offers an opportunity for community to come together to address food insecurity in the cities and towns where we live, work, and play.
Hunger Action DAY will also be recognized on Friday, Sept. 15.
Locally, The Open Door has already seen a 28% increase in visits to its Food Pantries alone in 2023, and a 20% increase in people visiting its pantries. This means more people are getting their groceries from The Open Door, more often.

Order a tasty “orange” treat at a local eatery. A handful of local restaurants have volunteered to help spread hunger awareness this month, including:
1606 Restaurant & Oyster Bar will offer mango and blood orange sorbet, and a Naranja Nights cocktail. QR codes for donations will also be available, and patrons may also round up their bill to support hunger-relief programs of The Open Door this September.
Brother’s Brew (reopening Sept. 14)will offer a special Hunger Action Month™ donut.
Cake Ann will offer special Hunger Action Month™ cupcakes.
Duckworth’s Gloucester will provide a special Hunger Action Month™ menu item.
Holy Cow will offer a Hunger Action Month™ ice-cream flavor starting on Hunger Action Day Friday Sept. 15 through the rest of the month at its Gloucester location.

Borrow a book from a special Hunger Action Month™ display at one of the following libraries: Sawyer Free Library in Gloucester, Manchester-by-the-Sea Public Library, T.O.H.P. Burnham Library in Essex, Hamilton-Wenham Public Library, and Boxford Town Library.
Wear orange. Join a handful of community groups who will be sporting orange this September to raise awareness, including the Gloucester City Council at their Tuesday, Sept. 12 meeting, Gloucester Police Department Community Impact Unit, CORE Peer Recovery & Resource Center, Beauport Hospitality Group staff, and Sudbay Automotive Group team members.

Mayor Greg Verga will issue a proclamation naming September Hunger Action Month™ on Hunger Action Day Friday, Sept. 15. The Gloucester City Council will also issue a proclamation at its Tuesday, Sept. 12 meeting.

WHAT: Second Glance will be accepting donations of clean, gently worn, unripped clothing.
Men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing for all seasons will be accepted.
Donations at Second Glance help generate revenue for hunger-relief programs of The Open Door, which serves 1 in 6 Gloucester residents.
In 2022, The Open Door helped stabilize the lives and health of 8,486 people from 4,872 households through the distribution of 1.78 million pounds of food.
Donations of clothes at Second Glance also offer a more sustainable, environmentally friendlier way to give old threads a second life. In 2022, the store recycled more than 87 tons of materials.

Families who need a little extra help putting food on the table this summer look no further: The Open Door Summer Meals program is back, with walk-up locations opening next week!
Children and teens under age 18 are welcome to visit any of the participating sites during scheduled hours to receive free, nutritious meals through late August. The Open Door is proud to sponsor three federal Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) sites this year. The Open Door will privately sponsor 10 additional free Summer Meals for Kids sites where meals will be offered to children and their families with flexibility and choice.
Meals will be provided, at a first come, first serve basis, at the sites and times as follows:
Gloucester Walk-Up Locations:
The Open Door at 28 Emerson Avenue will serve meals Monday through Friday. Monday through Wednesday meals will be available from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and meals will be available Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Summer Meals for Kids will operate from July 5 through August 25 at this site.
Riverdale Park (Mobile location in the area of 69 Veterans’ Way) will have meals available from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Summer Meals for Kids will operate from July 5 through August 25 at this site.
Willowood Gardens (Mobile location in the area of 40 Willowood Road) will have meals available from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Monday through Friday. Summer Meals for Kids will operate from July 5 through August 25 at this site.
Pond View Village (Mobile location in the area of 23 Lepage Lane) will have meals available from 11:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday. Summer Meals for Kids will operate from July 5 through August 25 at this site.
Gloucester High School at 32 Leslie O Johnson Road will have meals available from 9:45 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Monday through Friday. Summer Meals for Kids will operate from July 7 through August 8 at this site.
Field Days at Burnham’s Field with East Gloucester Community Church (in the field abutting Sargent, Burnham, and Pleasant Streets) will have meals available at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays from July 5 through Aug 23 EXCEPT for July 26.
Story Hour at Sawyer Free Library with Backyard Growers at the Garden Beds at 2 Dale Avenue, accessible through the Middle Street entrance will have meals available select Thursdays including June 29, July 13, July 27, August 3, August 10, and August 24 at 10:45 a.m.
Gloucester Enrolled Locations:
Summer Learning at West Parish at 10 Concord Street will have meals available for enrolled participants at 12:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Summer Meals for Kids will operate through July 27 at this site.
Summer Program at West Parish at 10 Concord Street will have meals available for enrolled participants from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Summer Meals for Kids will operate through August 3 at this site.
O’Maley Academy at 32 Cherry Street will have meals available for enrolled participants from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Summer Meals for Kids will operate through August 3 at this site.
Camp Spindrift at 27 Atlantic Street will have meals available for participants from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Summer Meals for Kids will operate through August 25 at this site.
Ipswich Walk-Up Location:
Ipswich Community Food Pantry at 00 Southern Heights in Ipswich will have meals available from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays. Summer Meals for Kids will operate from July 5 through August 25 at this site.
Ipswich Enrolled Location:
Winthrop Elementary School at 65 Central Street in Ipswich will have meals available for enrolled participants from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Summer Meals for Kids will operate from July 10 through August 10 at this site.

About the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)
The Open Door is participating in the Summer Food Service Program. Meals will be provided to all children without charge and are the same for all children regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service. Meals will be provided, at a first come, first serve basis.
In accordance with Federal civil rights law and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) civil rights regulations and policies, the USDA, its Agencies, offices, and employees, and institutions participating in or administering USDA programs are prohibited from discriminating based on race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, or reprisal or retaliation for prior civil rights activity in any program or activity conducted or funded by USDA.

Join in on the “So Salty” Fun at the Sawyer Free Library at 21 Main Street in downtown Gloucester on Saturday, January 21:

The Sawyer Free Library and The Open Doorwill present a cooking demonstration of a salty snack for families. Throughout the day, we will celebrate local food traditions with a display of our historic cookbooks and recipes in the Local History collection.
1:00 to 2:00 p.m. “Sea Shanties and Maritime Heritage Through Folk Music“
Come listen, sing, engage, and celebrate maritime heritage and community with local musician and teacher Olivia Gale, who was born and raised in Gloucester. Join the fun as Olivia leads an exploration of history, story, and performance of sea shanties, nautical ballads, and other folk music written about the sea.
Both events are free and open to all ages to come and enjoy!
These Sawyer Free Library events are a part of the 2nd Annual Gloucester’s So Salty Festival taking place throughout Gloucester Saturday, January 21 and Sunday January 22, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Celebrate the fish city’s recognizably salty character with local cultural institutions and businesses during the 2nd Annual Gloucester’s So Salty festival led by the Cape Ann Museum in partnership with area cultural institutions and businesses. Inspired by the annual Salem’s So Sweet event, this two-day event will include ice sculptures, live music, salty treats, free kids’ art activities, and much more.

A pet food drive organized by PAWsitive Pantry this weekend will collect cat and dog food to benefit The Open Door and Cape Ann Animal Aid.
