Gov Baker Team @ Rose Baker Sr Ctr

Rose Baker Senior Center
Wednesday, June 21, 9:30-11:30am

Governor Charles D. Baker’s Council to Address Aging in Massachusetts will hold listening sessions to hear ideas about how to make the Commonwealth the most livable state for people of all ages.

Specifically, we would like to hear about:

  • What factors make your community a great place to grow older?
  • How can we support families that include one or more older adults?
  • How can we promote more human connectedness (reduce loneliness, isolation) in communities?
  • What are the top two issues or concerns that create barriers to people being able to age well in their communities?
  • How can we accelerate innovation to support and connect older adults?
  • How can we change public perceptions about aging?

Join us to make an impact on your community!

If you are unable to attend please share your ideas by sending an email to: agingconversation@state.ma.us

Reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities are available upon request. Please contact William Travascio at 617-222-7579 or at William.Travascio@MassMail.State.MA.US

Elder Abuse Awareness Rally @ June 14

June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Month and June 15, 2017, is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The Gloucester Police Department, SeniorCare Inc. and the Gloucester Council on Aging are holding a rally on Wednesday, June 14, to increase awareness of this growing issue in our society.

10,000 people turn 65 in the US every day.  That trend is going to continue for the next 20 years.  Our demographics are shifting, and we will soon have more elder people in the US than ever before.  At the same time that the population is growing, we know that a startling number of elders face abusive situations.  Every year an estimated 5 million, or 1 in 10, older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. And that’s only part of the picture: Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23.5 cases go unreported.

Elder abuse and neglect and take on various forms. It can be physical, emotional/verbal, sexual, financial, neglect by a caregiver, or self-neglect. Elder abuse can occur anywhere – in the home, in nursing homes, or other institutions. It affects seniors across all socioeconomic groups, cultures, and races. In Massachusetts, an elder is anyone 60 or older.

If you suspect abuse or self-neglect, don’t assume that someone has already reported it. In cases of immediate danger call 911. Otherwise, you can call SeniorCare at 978-281-1750 during business hours or the elder abuse hotline at 800-922-2275 after hours.

Concerned citizens are invited to participate. Join SeniorCare and our local safety agencies in bringing light to the horrendous crime of elder abuse. Please stop by to show your support!

SeniorCare is committed to identifying and stopping Elder Abuse!

Gloucester Area Astronomy Club Meeting Friday Night 6/9 @8:00

blogpic_orig

Friday’s program at the Lanesville Community Center will feature a presentation by our own Paul Duval on his September 2015 trip to the Deutsches Museum in Munich, home to a remarkable astronomy exhibition.

The exhibits included a planetarium and even an amateur astronomy exhibit. Paul went on a one hour inter-planetary walk through a scale model of the solar system, and got a chance to observe through a number of exotic and historic telescopes.

In addition to the featured presentation by Paul Duval, Friday night is also Jim Koerth night at GAAC. Jim, one of GAAC’s founding members, will be pulling up stakes and moving to North Carolina in the next few weeks, so come in, have some cake, and say bon voyage to an original GAAC stalwart.

deutschesYou won’t want to miss Jim’s farewell or this colorful record of Paul’s trip — come early for a good seat, good things to eat, great conversation, and to see and hear all about adventures of a GAACster in the Deutches Museum.

The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club meets at 8:00pm on the second Friday of every month at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street in Lanesville. For more info on the club, see the website, Facebook page, or follow the club on Twitter, @GAACster.
