First Baptist Church Holly Fair!
The First Baptist Church in Gloucester, 38 Gloucester Avenue, will hold its annual Holly Fair on Saturday, December 5 from 9:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. There will be homemade candy and baked goods, crafters, a White Elephant table, a raffle with prizes from many local businesses including a brand-new Keurig coffee maker, and a wonderful luncheon with our traditional kale soup and fish chowder. The Gloucester Writer’s Center is holding a celebration and poetry read for Peter Albert Todd, Gloucester’s Poet Laureate who is gravely ill and in hospice. We will show a short video taken this past spring of Peter telling us stories of Gloucester in the 1930’s and members of the audience will read Peter’s poems and share stories with and of him. Peter, who may be there in person or if not, participate remotely via Skype or video. We will laugh and cry and enjoy the evening with Peter. We will also be take pre-orders for the soon-to-be published poetry book “Innocence of Vision, Peter Todd’s Gloucester” and a book will be ordered for everyone who donates $10 or more to The Love of Peter Todd Fund. Two variations on LED streetlights being considered by the city have been set up for evaluation. The test installations are the first four lights on the west side of Washington Street just south of Gee Avenue.There are two types, rated at 3,000 degrees Kelvin and 4,000 degrees Kelvin. The “color” of the light is slightly different between the two types.
People concerned about light pollution and the effect of the lights on wildlife have been advocating for the 3,000K lights. Send your comments to Matt Coogan in the City’s Planning Department. His email address is:
