Gloucester Rotary Club Announces Photography Contest

2016coverThe Gloucester Rotary Club will publish a 12-month Cape Ann photo calendar for 2017 as a fundraiser.  All profits will go to the Gloucester Rotary Club’s efforts to raise money that supports the many community and international activities in which the club is involved.

In Order to publish a beautiful calendar, the Club is requesting high quality digital photos that show the unique beauty of Cape Ann throughout the year. Gloucester photos are preferred, but images from other Cape Ann towns will be considered. Water—either ocean or tidal river—must be visible somewhere in all entries. Images from each season: winter, spring, summer and fall are encouraged. A selection committee from the Rotary Club will make the choices.

Full contest rules and requirements are available online at www.gloucesterotary.us.  All entries must be received by 12:00 p.m. on September 16, 2016.

More information about the Rotary Club of Gloucester is available online at www.gloucesterrotary.us and www.facebook.com/RotaryGloucesterMA.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Month at SeniorCare

June is World Elder Abuse Awareness Month and June 15, 2016, is Elder Abuse Awareness Day. SeniorCare Inc. and several non-profit and civic organizations are holding special events on Cape Ann and the North Shore to increase awareness of this growing issue in our society.

10,000 people turn 65 in the US every day. That trend is going to continue for the next 20 years. Our demographics are shifting, and we will soon have more elder people in the US than ever before. At the same time that the population is growing, we know that a startling number of elders face abusive conditions. Every year an estimated 5 million, or 1 in 10, older Americans are victims of elder abuse, neglect, or exploitation. And that’s only part of the picture: Experts believe that for every case of elder abuse or neglect reported, as many as 23.5 cases go unreported.

Elder abuse can be physical, emotional/verbal, sexual, financial, neglect by a caregiver, or self-neglect. Elder abuse can occur anywhere – in the home, in nursing homes, or other institutions. It affects seniors across all socioeconomic groups, cultures, and races. In Massachusetts, an elder is anyone 60 or older.

If you suspect abuse or self-neglect, don’t assume that someone has already reported it. In cases of immediate danger call 911. Otherwise, you can call SeniorCare at 978-281-1750 during business hours or the elder abuse hotline at 800-922-2275 after hours.

This year, SeniorCare is participating in three rallies to increase awareness of Elder Abuse. The first rally will take place in front of Beverly City Hall on Saturday, June 11, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Beverly’s event is supported by the Beverly Police Department, HAWC, SeniorCare and the Beverly Council on Aging.

Gloucester will hold a rally on Thursday, June 16, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to meet at the flagpole in front of the Gloucester Police Station on Main Street at 11:00 a.m. The rally will march down Main Street, continuing along Rogers Street to the Fitz Henry Lane parking lot (across from Walgreens on the corner of Rogers Street and Harbor Loop). Following the march, there will be a cookout in the Fitz Henry Lane lot until 2:00 p.m. Gloucester’s event is supported by the Gloucester Police Department, HAWC and SeniorCare.

Rockport’s “Show You Care” rally will be held on Friday, June 17, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Five Corners (the intersection of Broadway, Railroad Avenue, and Main Street). This event is supported by the Rockport Police Department, the Rockport Council on Aging and SeniorCare.

Concerned citizens are invited to participate in any or all of these events. Join SeniorCare and our local safety agencies in bringing light to the horrendous crime of elder abuse. Please stop by to show your support!

SeniorCare is committed to stopping Elder Abuse!

Gloucester Rotary Honors Armstrong & Rosa

Rotary-FullColor-01

The Gloucester Rotary Club has named Roger Armstrong and Maggie Rosa as Paul Harris Fellows, the prestigious award named after the Chicago lawyer who founded the Rotary movement in 1905. Armstrong was selected by a Club committee of previous recipients of the award, while Rosa was chosen by members of the Interact Club, the very active group of Gloucester High School junior Rotarians.  Armstrong and Rosa will be honored at a special dinner on Tuesday, May 10, at Cruiseport Gloucester, located at 6 Rowe Square in downtown Gloucester. The social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Roger Armstrong
Roger Armstrong

Roger Armstrong was born in Danvers in 1942, and graduated from Beverly High School in 1960. Subsequent training at Northeastern University and Wentworth Institute would prepare Roger for a career in manufacturing that spanned four decades. He worked for and owned a variety of North Shore machining and engineering companies, responsible for all facets of the manufacturing process, especially quality control standards. Roger currently splits his time between Wilbur Tracy Associates as a Quality Assurance Consultant and State of the Art Gallery, which he opened in 1997 along with his significant other Sharon Pablo.

Roger is heavily involved in the life of the community, serving as President of the North Shore Arts Association, a Corporator of the Sawyer Free Library, a member of the Gloucester Committee for the Arts and the Downtown Development Commission, and a Corporator of the Institution for Savings. He is especially proud of his role as designer of the World War II Memorial on Kent Circle. He has been a member of the Gloucester Rotary Club since 2006.

Maggie Rosa
Maggie Rosa

Maggie Rosa was born and raised in Great Britain, and came to the United States in 1968 to work in the field of molecular biology at the University of Chicago. A short time later, she entered into the University’s graduate school program in the Department of Biophysics and Theoretical Biology. This proved to be a very important decision—she met husband to be Joe in the same program and both received PhDs in 1976. They did post-graduate research at Yale University and were later hired as scientists by Biogen, a start-up biotech company. Maggie spent 11 years with the company, and then used the proceeds from her stock options to buy a home in Gloucester.

Maggie’s community service began as a volunteer on the Schooner Adventure, and soon spread to the Gloucester Historical Commission, the Gloucester Garden Club, and the League of Women Voters of Cape Ann. Mayor John Bell asked Maggie to lead an effort to restore and preserve City Hall. She has served as Chair of the Restoration Committee ever since! Her other significant affiliation has been with the Gloucester Education Foundation, which she led as a volunteer Executive Director from 2008 to 2012 and as President from 2012 to 2015.

Tickets to the Paul Harris Distinguished Service Award Dinner are $47 per person and may be reserved by contacting event Chairman Steve Kaity at 978-879-1051. The Dinner is open to the general public, and friends and colleagues of Armstrong and Rosa are encouraged to attend.

The mission of Rotary International is to provide service to others, promote integrity, and advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through its fellowship of business, professional, and community leaders.
