SeniorCare’s RSVP Volunteer Program will hold its Second Annual Volunteer Recruitment Fair at Cruiseport in Gloucester in celebration of National Volunteer Week on Thursday, April 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. There will be more than 30 nonprofits with information about how volunteers can get involved and make a difference. Nonprofits representing a wide range of needs throughout the community are looking for volunteers of any age.  The Volunteer Fair is made possible through a grant from the Massachusetts Service Alliance, with support from SeniorCare and Cruiseport. SeniorCare Inc. will host a presentation by Attorney Natalie A. Simon addressing concerns we have as we age and steps we can take to protect our financial interests on Thursday, April 7, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the SeniorCare offices located at 49 Blackburn Center in Gloucester, MA.

Attorney Simon will address concerns about losing assets if it becomes necessary to enter a nursing facility. In addition, she will discuss how best to prepare legally, including the creation of critical documents (i.e., Health Care Proxy, Durable Power of Attorney and Advance Directives). Finally, Attorney Simon will discuss trusts and who needs them, who does not, whether or not it is important to avoid probate, and the myths and misinformation that are causing confusion in this important decision-making process.

Natalie A. Simon is a Gloucester, Massachusetts elder law attorney. Attorney Simon received her JD, cum laude, from Boston College Law School in 1981, and, after associations with Boston law firms, opened her own elder law practice in Gloucester. She has been a member of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys since 1991, is a founding officer of its Massachusetts Chapter and has served on the Chapter’s Board of Directors since its inception. She has received awards for Outstanding Achievement from the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys and its Massachusetts Chapter. Attorney Simon was delighted to have been asked to join the Board of Directors of SeniorCare Inc. in 2013.

“Money Management: Financial Literacy on a Fixed Income” will be presented on Wednesday, March 16, 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Rose Baker Senior Center, located at 6 Manuel F. Lewis Street in downtown Gloucester. This program is jointly sponsored by SeniorCare Inc., the Massachusetts Money Management Program, and the Gloucester Council on Aging; and will be presented by SeniorCare’s Money Management Program Manager Sarah Wetzel.

Topics to be covered during the workshop include:

• Develop a budget
• Set reachable goals
• Develop strategies to save
• Worksheets for budgeting, tracking expenses
• Take charge of credit card debt
• List of resources available for benefits and services to help save and to protect against scams and frauds.

Viewing Party on Wednesday, February 17, at SeniorCare Inc. has been cancelled.

SeniorCare has been notified of last-minute changes in the format of the Candidates’ Forum on February 17. In addition, the only candidate to have confirmed their participation at this time is Bernie Sanders– and he is not scheduled to appear until 4:00 p.m.

Due to the scheduling delays and uncertainty of candidates appearances, SeniorCare is cancelling the viewing event.

SeniorCare Inc.’s RSVP Volunteers of the North Shore are proud to partner with AARP and coordinate the AARP Tax-Aide Program, a vital service for elders, enabling them much needed assistance with their taxes. It is the nation’s largest free, volunteer-run tax assistance and preparation service. Across the nation, there are over 34,000 AARP Tax-Aide volunteers who help more than 2.6 million taxpayers file their federal, state and local tax returns each year. SeniorCare’s group of RSVP Volunteer Tax Aides consists of over 50 certified volunteers who contributed more than 5,000 hours of service assisting over 4,500 elders in 2015!

In 2016, from February through April, AARP and volunteers from SeniorCare RSVP will assist taxpayers 60 & older with middle to low income with their tax preparation and filing, providing free tax assistance at over 30 locations throughout the North Shore and Cape Ann.

SeniorCare Inc. will hold its annual Valentine’s Day Breakfast Fundraiser Breakfast at The Gloucester House, located 63 Rogers Street in downtown Gloucester on Friday, February 12, 2016, from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.  Tickets are $12 per person and include a buffet breakfast. Tickets are available in advance by calling 978-281-1750 or may be purchased at the door. Proceeds from the breakfast will benefit SeniorCare’s Meals on Wheels program.

SeniorCare Inc.’s Meals on Wheels program brings a daily meal right to the door for frail and homebound elders, Monday through Friday. Menus are designed by nutrition experts to meet the needs of older adults and are prepared by a professional caterer.  In addition, homebound elders have a daily interaction with the delivery team—sometimes their only human contact that day.  SeniorCare currently delivers Meals on Wheels to more than 550 elders each day.  Annually, this means 136,216 home-delivered meals and 39,250 meals served at dining sites in Beverly, Gloucester, Essex, Manchester, Rockport, Ipswich, Hamilton, Topsfield, and Wenham.

SeniorCare now hosts free SHINE counseling sessions for Medicare members and prospective members. SHINE Counselors offer free, unbiased information about the many choices to be made when enrolling or re-enrolling in Medicare. SHINE, Serving the Health Insurance Needs of Everyone, provides free health insurance information, counseling, and assistance to Massachusetts residents with Medicare and their caregivers. SHINE is administered by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs in coordination with local agencies.
