The March 13 meeting of the Seaside Garden Club presents Trish Wesley Umbrell of the Natick Community Organic Farm (http://www.natickfarm.org/) with a maple sugaring demonstration.

Trish will share tips on tree identification and use in home landscape, and share the rich history and traditions of New England maple sugaring. She will give a virtual tour of her local favorite sugar shack, and provide practical tips for making your own maple syrup. Maple syrup will be for sale at the meeting.

The program is sponsored by the Manchester Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Guests are welcome, free of charge.

The Seaside Garden Club meets at the Manchester Community Center, located at 40 Harbor Point, Manchester-by-the-Sea. Social time begins with light refreshments at 7:00 pm, followed by the program at 7:30 pm. Newcomers are welcome.

Magnolia Cribbage League starts its spring session on Wednesday March 7 at 6:30pm at J.D. Meyers Pub, 24 Lexington Ave, Magnolia. New players are welcome to join in this friendly game of cribbage. $40 covers 10 weeks of play plus a dinner and cash prizes.  If you cannot commit to a 10-week session then consider substituting for a regular player. On Thursday, March 1, “Let the Youth Lead – An Open Forum for Youth Voices” will be held for youth from across Cape Ann. The forum is scheduled to begin at 6:30 PM and will meet in the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church’s Community Room. The accessible entrance is at 10 Church Street.

 The goal is to provide a space where young people can meet and share their thoughts, feelings, questions and ideas regarding the recent wave of youth leadership and action happening across the country.

Participants will be encouraged to explore how they can effectively increase youth agency locally and beyond, in the short term and the long term.

The current conversation about gun laws and school safety is certainly one of the biggest topics right now, but the forum will not be limited to that subject.

Should interest arise in the upcoming March 24 March for Our Lives events – locally, in Boston or in DC – a breakout group will form to develop options to support participation.

The forum will be facilitated by Rose Sheehan, Gloucester Unitarian Universalist’s Education and Community Engagement Leader. Refreshments will be served.

Apply for a GHS summer internship for July and August. Get a jump on your friends and nail down a summer job. THERE ARE ONLY 20 OPEN SLOTS, SO WE LOOK FORWARD TO REVIEWING YOUR APPLICATION ASAP!

As part of this internship you will:

• Be matched with a local company where you will gain important workplace skills
• Be paid minimum wage or a stipend
• Start to build a solid resume for college and future endeavors

Internship highlights:

• Open to students in 9^th through 12^th grades
• Interviews will be conducted starting in March and we will let you know if you are accepted into the program
• Employee orientation will be held in June
• A 2.5 hour workplace skills workshop each Wednesday at GHS during the weeks of July 9th- August 17th, and an internship placement at least 10 hours per week (exact weeks/hours will depend on the employer but will mostly be over those 6 weeks)

The Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Economic Outlook Breakfast on Thursday, March 1, at the Gloucester House Restaurant, 63 Rogers Street, Gloucester. Check-in and breakfast will start at 7:30 AM and the program will begin at 8:00 AM. CLICK HERE to register.

This year the Chamber welcomes President and CEO of Gorton’s Judson Reis as keynote speaker.  Judson’s timely presentation will offer an overview of Gorton’s current business after nearly 170 years here in Gloucester. He will also offer his insights on the state of the seafood industry domestically and internationally, how the industry has evolved and how Gorton’s is adapting to these changes.  Mr. Reis will also give his perspective and insights on the overall economic outlook for the year ahead.

Jud Reis joined Gorton’s in 1990 as a Marketing Assistant.  During his 28 year career at Gorton’s he has held a number of progressively more responsible roles within the Marketing activity including assignments in consumer marketing, trade planning, new products, and business development.  In 2004, he was promoted to Vice President of Marketing, where he had overall responsibility for the Gorton’s Brand in the US and BlueWater brand in Canada.  In April of 2009 he was promoted to President and CEO.

The Economic Outlook Breakfast will also feature such regular highlights as the introduction of new Chamber board members, special salutes, and the chance to connect with business colleagues and elected officials.  A light breakfast at the Gloucester House Restaurant is included and the program will conclude by 9:00 AM.  Tickets are $30 and may be purchased online at capeannchamber.com or by calling the Chamber office 978-283-1601.
