Seaside Garden Club’s Feb 12 Meeting
Seeing History, the floral work of women artists, slide/lecture by Martha Chiarchiaro
Explore the art of Maria Sibylla Merian, botanical artist of the 17th century, and Rachel Ruysch, international master of floral still life in the 17th and 18th centuries. These distinguished women artists created a legacy and broadened our knowledge of flora and fauna.
Martha Chiarchiaro has lectured on art history for more than 30 years. She received her Master’s degree in the History of Art from Williams College and teaches a variety of art history courses at the Worcester Art Museum and other local cultural organizations. Martha has presented topics ranging from floral paintings, American landscapes, and Monet’s gardens at Giverny to many local New England garden clubs. Martha brings history to life with enthusiasm. Her survey of art history, from prehistoric to contemporary times, touches upon highlights of art history that offer students greater understanding of the social, political, and economic events of the time.
This program is supported by a grant from the Manchester Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. The program is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
The Seaside Garden Club is a group of fun, active, civic-minded and hands-on gardeners. We welcome all types of gardeners from beginners to experienced… there is always something to learn and share. We invite you to become a member of our club and enjoy our monthly programs which feature interesting guest speakers and creative workshops.
We meet on the 2nd Tuesday of the month, September through June, at the Manchester Community Center, located at 40 Harbor Point, Manchester-by-the-Sea. Social time begins with light refreshments at 7:00 pm, followed by the program at 7:30 pm. Program dates are subject to change; see our website for more information: https://seasidegardenclub.wordpress.com/.
