Looking for fun activities for your kids over February break? Sign them up for hands-on gardening activities at Backyard Growers!

Tuesday February 21: Sun & Water; 10am-12pm; In this two hour workshop, elementary school students will learn all about how sun and water help their garden grow. They will build a solar heated cold frame, make rain sticks, do water cycle experiments, and more! Tickets here!

Wednesday February 22: Preschool Hour; 10am-11am; In this one hour workshop, preschool students will learn all about how soil helps their garden grow! They will meet some worms, make a vegetable craft, and plant a windowsill garden to take home!  Tickets here!

Thursday February 23: Space & Seeds; 10am-12pm; In this two hour workshop, elementary school students will learn all about how space and seeds help their garden grow. They will explore seeds and learn how they move, play a square foot gardening game, plant windowsill gardens to take home, and more! Tickets here!

Pressed Flower Art Workshop & FREE Seed Swap!

FRESH presents a pressed flower art workshop and free seed swap! Join us for a brief presentation and a fun, hands-on lesson in pressed flower art led by artist Jacki Harrington! Also bring along your vegetable and flower seeds to swap and share with fellow gardeners. You can come for one or both events. Backyard Growers staff will happily share garden tips and answer your growing questions!

FRESH is a six-week exhibition, with accompanying workshops and presentations, hosted by the Rocky Neck Art Colony and Backyard Growers.

This is an exciting collaboration by two inspiring non-profits—Backyard Growers, which encourages an active relationship with food and the earth, and Rocky Neck Art Colony, which encourages and promotes excellence in the arts.

In this exhibition, artists from all over New England will present works that reflect on the theme FRESH, exploring the ways in which food connects us to the earth, nourishes us, and ties us to warmth, family, friends, and memories. Join us in celebrating the new life that emerges as we leave the dark of winter for the optimism of spring! Contemporary, experimental and traditional art in all media will be on view.

Gloucester Announces Sunday Night Parking Ban; Schools Closed Monday

Issued by Mayor Sefatia Romeo Theken at 2:20PM, Sunday, Feb 12th:

Effective at 6PM tonight, Sunday, February 12th, the city has declared a snow emergency and parking ban on all city streets due to expected heavy sleet, snowfall, and powerful wind gusts. Additionally, Gloucester schools will be closed tomorrow and trash collection will be delayed one day.

Again, starting at 6PM tonight, Sunday February 12th, until 9AM tomorrow, Monday, February 13th, all vehicles are banned from parking on city streets. 

Residents may park in all municipal and school parking lots but must remove their vehicles once the ban has expired at 9AM tomorrow or will be subject to ticketing and towing at the owner’s expense. 

All residents and businesses are reminded that they are responsible for clearing snow from sidewalks adjacent to their property. Please make every effort to shovel out hydrants at or near your homes, and please check on your elderly and disabled. Again, violators of this emergency declaration are subject to ticketing and towing at the owner’s expense.  

Your cooperation during this parking ban is necessary for efficient and safe snow removal efforts.

 To repeat, the City of Gloucester has issued a parking ban on all city streets as of 6PM tonight, Sunday, February 12th, 2017 until 9AM tomorrow, Monday, February 13th, with all vehicles banned from parking on city streets between those hours. Additionally, Gloucester schools will be closed Monday and trash collection will be delayed one day.
