The Great Salt Marsh
Author and Ipswich resident, Doug Stewart will present an illustrated lecture on Essex County’s spectacular Great Salt Marsh on Saturday, Feb 6th.
The Marsh is a biological engine whose nutrients sustain fish stocks and bird life. It also protects shore towns from flooding and storm surges, but despite its necessity, the Marsh is poorly understood and under-appreciated. Stewart will explore the Great Marsh’s past as valuable real estate for farming salt hay, its unique success over much of the past century in dodging the nation’s swamp-filling mania, and its uncertain future as sea-level rise accelerates.
The photography of Ipswich native, conservation volunteer and master photographer, Dorothy Kerper Monnelly will be on display in the auditorium. Monnelly and Stewart collaborated on Between Land and Sea – The Great Marsh.

It’s Comedy Night at GAAC!
Friday February 12 at 8:00 pm is comedy night at the Gloucester Area Astronomy Club! Club fave Glenn Chaple will regale us with his presentation on astronomy humor; Glenn will be briefly preceded by Steve Kolaczkowski with the low down on what’s up for 2016, presented in his inimical style. Hint: there will be planets galore, and even a transit!
But on to the main event. Last year we previewed a small excerpt of Glenn’s “Astronomy Humor” presentation and the full presentation promises to be a rare experience. Those who were there will tell you that you’re in for a laugh-filled and on-topic evening at the Lanesville Community Center. The parking is free, and there’s no cost. What’s not to like? So come on in for all the usual great stuff to eat and drink, and the always-great conversation with your astronomy friends; you don’t want to miss this one.

Rockport Middle School $1000 microgrant winner!

“BEE SAFE, BEE NATURAL” WINS $1000
On Tuesday, January 26th, Awesome Rockport teamed up with the Education Foundation of Rockport to select one of three Rockport Middle School finalists to receive a $1000 grant to make Rockport more awesome. Kids from grades 5 through 8 were invited to participate, and there were 19 applicants for the grant! Three finalists pitched their ideas in public forum at the middle school cafeteria Tuesday night. Superintendent Rob Liebow and Mr. Jim Gutstadt represented the Ed Foundation and participated in the voting process as well.
The winning pitch, titled “Bee Safe, Bee Natural”, was made by three 5th graders looking to establish a honey bee hive in Rockport. The group wants to maintain the hive, train others about beekeeping, establish a source for local honey production, and help educate others on the challenges facing honey bee populations and why bees are so integral to our health and to the production of the food we eat.
The two awesome runner up proposals will hopefully reapply in future challenges. One group hopes to establish an outdoor community ice skating rink, and the other is focused on bolstering a cooking club recently started at the Rockport Middle School.
It was an amazing night of presentations by some inspiring, highly motivated kids! Now that’s AWESOME!

On February 5th, 2016 Dave Edwards, President and CEO of the Essex County Community Foundation (ECCF), along with Julie Bishop, VP for Philanthropy, will lead an important discussion at Cape Ann Television (www.capeanntv.org) about addressing the needs of Essex County.
The ECCF is gearing up for an unprecedented major community leadership project, an initiative focused on making a long-term, measurable impact on the quality of life in Essex County. The end result will not only help to guide their philanthropic priorities and strategic grantmaking, but it will also arm local community leaders with the data to help move the region forward. The ECCF will rely heavily on collaborations with funders, elected officials, business leaders and nonprofits to see their vision through.
