The Gloucester Biotechnology Academy is now accepting applications for the Class of 2022! The Academy, located in Blackburn Industrial Park, provides high school graduates with the training needed to begin a career in biotech. This innovative program pairs ten months of hands-on training in a state-of-the-art teaching lab with a paid, three-month internship at a biotech company or research institute in Boston, Cambridge or the North Shore.

The program featuring some of Cape Ann’s best certified natural health care practitioners, offers the community an opportunity to connect virtually while discovering the benefits of yoga, meditation, acupressure, natural heath and energizing local hikes.

WHAT: In response to the continued state-wide limit on large gatherings, the Cape Ann Museum is pleased to offer a new monthly program, the CAM Virtual Lecture Series. The series kicks off with “Building an Exhibition in a Pandemic” featuring CAM Librarian/Archivist Trenton Carls and CAM Curatorial Assistant Leon Doucette as they lead virtual attendees on a tour of the Museum’s newest exhibition, CAM (Re)Connects, live on Zoom.
The exhibition features many of the objects and works of art spotlighted in the Museum’s virtual outreach shared over the first six months of the pandemic under the name, CAM Connects. The hosts will discuss the massive pivot that the Cape Ann Museum, along with fellow cultural institutions, took in 2020 and how the pandemic combined with creativity to give birth to this exhibition.
This new virtual lecture series builds off the Museum’s successful online book launch of Paul St. Germain’s “Saving Straitsmouth Island” last November. The monthly program offers participants around the world the chance to engage deeply with the Museum’s extensive collection from the safety of home.

This Saturday, January 23 the Sawyer Free Library’s GLOUCESTER LYCEUM will kick off a new monthly virtual series “Exercises for the Quiet Eye”presented by art historian and museum educator, Annie Storr. This interactive, creative program is designed to open the moment when someone can fully see the art in front of them. It aims to suspend attention, to quiet the drive to “figure out” and “move on.”
Storr developed “Exercises for the Quiet Eye” to encourage patient reflection, appreciation, and an attempt to avoid the rush to understand, or determine a set interpretation for what we see. It guides participants to use art to embrace ambiguity, intellectual exploration, and personal reflection.
This special virtual program will take place from 2-4pm on Saturdays: January 23, February 27, March 27, April 24 and May 22

Gardeners harvesting fresh vegetables at Willowood Community Garden
Backyard Growers‘ Community Garden Applications are now open for the 2021 growing season. Come grow your own vegetables in a community garden at Burnham’s Field, McPherson Park, Pond View Village, Poplar Park, Riverdale, or Willowood. Gardeners receive a raised garden bed, access to a garden mentor, and free or subsidized vegetable seeds, seedlings, and gardening and cooking workshops.

GLOUCESTER , MASS. – Gloucester Education Foundation has partnered with the Gloucester Police Department to fund school-based activity of “Ace” the Department’s new Community Resource Dog.
With support from the Dusky Fund and other local donors, Gloucester Education Foundation has awarded $5,000 to the Community Resource Dog program. This funding will make it possible for Ace the dog to spend additional time in classrooms helping students cope with social-emotional needs and challenges presented by the pandemic.
“Supporting our kids’ mental health and well-being during this incredibly challenging year is a priority for us at Gloucester Education Foundation” said Aria McElhenny, Executive Director of the local nonprofit. “Ace brings joy, smiles and comfort to our students, and, we’re thrilled to partner with the Police to help make sure as many kids as possible will benefit from this wonderful program.”
In addition to more classroom time for Ace, the grant from Gloucester Education Foundation also provides funds for a new interactive storybook about Ace that will be gifted to local classrooms, along with “Ace” golden retriever stuffed animals that will remain with students as a continued source of comfort when Ace is not able to be with them in person.
“The Community Impact Units’ Kops-n-Kids program is proud to collaborate with the Gloucester Education Foundation to support “Ace” and our Community Resource Dog Initiative,” said Lieutenant Jeremiah Nicastro. “With our new partnership, Ace will be able to visit all elementary classrooms in the Gloucester School system where his handler, Officer Sutera, will read the interactive book to the children and leave a book and a stuffed animal in each class.”
In addition to the therapeutic benefits that Ace brings to kids, his presence in schools helps to establish positive relationships among kids and the Gloucester Police.
Cape Ann Community
